Earth Check Silver Certification 2025

Whatley Manor Achieves Four Years of EarthCheck Silver Certification and Retires Carbon Credits to Support Climate and Community Action

Whatley Manor is proud to announce the achievement of its fourth consecutive year of EarthCheck Silver Certification, a global standard for sustainability in the travel and tourism industry. As an EarthCheck Certified member in the Vacation Hotel sector, this recognition affirms the organisation’s performance across 10 Key Performance Areas, including energy efficiency, water conservation, solid waste management, community impact, and ecosystem protection.

In its 2024 environmental reporting completed with the carbon accounting platform Greenly, Whatley Manor recorded a total of 907 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCOâ‚‚e) across Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, calculated using the market-based approach. This is an astounding 14% decrease in overall emissions compared to 2023.

  • Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources (e.g., fuel combustion on-site).
  • Scope 2 accounts for indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling.
  • Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions that occur in the value chain, such as supplier emissions, employee travel, and waste.

To further demonstrate climate leadership, Whatley Manor has retired 1,000 verified carbon credits from the San Jerónimo Coatlán project in Oaxaca, Mexico—an internationally recognised conservation initiative managed by Ya’ax Carbon. The project protects endangered cloud forest ecosystems, supports biodiversity, safeguards vital water resources, and strengthens local Zapotec communities through sustainable forest stewardship. “Sustainability is embedded in our operations, from efficient energy and water use to supporting meaningful climate action,” said Magaly Etter, ESG Manager at Whatley Manor. “EarthCheck Silver Certification and our investment in carbon credits represent more than a milestone—they reflect our long-term responsibility to the planet and the communities we serve.”

EarthCheck’s Vacation Hotel sector benchmarks organisations based on performance indicators aligned with their operational footprint, including Guest Nights as the primary activity measure. Whatley Manor continues to meet and exceed these performance standards as part of its annual Benchmarking Assessment and long-term Sustainability Management System.
